Regardless of their personal style or type of wedding, one thing most brides have in common is their decision to wear a veil.

The long white wedding veil first became popular in 1840 when Queen Victoria wore the bridal adornment for her marriage to Prince Albert. More than a century later, Princess Diana upped the ante with 153 yards of tulle and made the cathedral-length veil a must-have for every modern bride’s wedding. Bridal headpiece variations later, including headbands and floral crowns, the veil is an accessory that brides keep coming back to.

Long wedding veils are making a comeback as brides are going more traditional again, especially after Meghan Markle walked down the aisle in a 16-foot-long custom-made veil. She not only paid homage to her groom’s beloved mother, but she was also on trend with her regal wedding day look. “All of our brides want long wedding veils,” says Sharon Sever, Galia Lahav head designer. “They want to play up their big moment.”

“The bridal veil is an inseparable part of a wedding ceremony,” says Sever. “It also creates a mystique around the bride and her gown.” While the veil is customary in almost every culture and religion, it’s a piece that a bride can completely personalize for her big day. Galia Lahav’s bridal couture collection offers brides the opportunity to make their dream bridal look a reality with a made-to-order veil and gown. “We specialize in customized veils that complement our dresses,” says Sever. With Galia Lahav’s wedding veil collection, the bride is involved in designing her perfect accessory—from choosing the length, color, and shape of veil that best suits her dress to adding exclusive lace trim, crystal embellishment, and even beaded initials.

The collection features luxurious veils from a chic fingertip length to a majestic 195 inches in dress-coordinating shades, including a glamorous sparkling tulle. “A Spanish mantilla with elaborate lace trim is one of my favorite veils for brides,” says Sever, whose passion for embroidered headpieces and attention to detail started when he apprenticed for the Christian Lacroix couture house in Paris. “Drama and flamboyance are always present in our designs at Galia Lahav. Each bride is a queen for us and the veil is an essential part of her total look.”

Sever’s tip for a stunning bridal look? “The longer, the more dramatic! A long wedding veil automatically creates a dreamy, ethereal look without hiding the gown’s silhouette.” When choosing a long veil, it should fall past your dress’ train so that it doesn’t get tangled with your gown or look messy. If you want a veil with a trim, it should go all the way around; and appliqués should complement the back of your dress.
